Our Story

Tucked away in the lush hills of Mason Hall, Tobago, Corbin Local Wildlife is a living conservation space — home to rescued animals and species we’re working to restore through careful breeding and release. What began as a small effort to care for injured wildlife has grown into a working nature reserve and one-of-a-kind rescue and rehabilitation centre.

But our work goes beyond animals. We’ve restored and protected native forest and developed deep expertise in Tobago’s ecology — from birds and butterflies to native plants and forest systems. Tobago faces a significant biodiversity data gap, with little documentation of what species are truly native or which may have already disappeared.

To address this, we created Corbin Forest School — a research-led initiative that documents what we see and learn in the forest. It’s a place for inquiry and knowledge-sharing, built through local knowledge, hands-on experience and direct observation.

We are small and independent, with no government funding and everything we do is supported by our visitors. Simply coming on a tour or donating helps us continue this work — caring for wildlife, protecting habitat, and building a deeper understanding of Tobago’s natural heritage.

Meet the Team

Co-Founder • Guide

Ian Wright

Ian is an environmentalist, artist, and landscape architect with a lifetime of experience in conservation. Originally from the UK, he has led environmental and forestry projects in Ireland and Africa, and in 2002, founded the Irish Natural Forestry Foundation, planting over 2 million trees and restoring habitats.

After moving to Tobago, Ian developed a deep love for the island’s wildlife and forest — much of it through learning directly from Roy. In 2015, the two co-founded Corbin Local Wildlife to rescue, breed, and release Tobago’s native species. Today, Ian leads tours and works to expand Corbin’s impact into the forest and surrounding communities.

Co-Founder • Expert Guide

Roy Corbin

Roy was born and raised in Tobago and has over 30 years of experience as a farmer and wildlife expert. A former hunter, he developed a deep understanding of Tobago’s local wildlife, which eventually inspired him to shift his focus to conservation.

In 2015, he co-founded Corbin Local Wildlife with Ian, creating a space to rescue, rehabilitate, and breed local wildlife for release. Roy is a well-known figure in the community, often called on to rescue animals, support people with wild pets, and share his knowledge about local species and sustainable hunting.

Today, he continues to guide tours, care for the animals, and lead Corbin’s outreach in the forest and across Tobago.

Guide

Michael Corbin

Michael was born and raised in Tobago, where life on the island and on the family farm helped shape his deep love and respect for nature.

Michael has attended numerous seminars and training sessions focused on wildlife and forest conservation. His knowledge is grounded in both experience and a lifelong passion for the natural world — something he describes as “60 percent of my life.”

Michael has been involved with Corbin Local Wildlife since the beginning. He started by caring for the animals and gradually took on a guiding role, sharing his experiences and knowledge with visitors.

What he enjoys most is connecting with people from around the world — sharing the beauty of Tobago, learning about their cultures, and exchanging stories.

Animal Care

Denroy Corbin

Denroy was born and raised in Tobago, where he grew up working on his family’s farm — animals and nature have always been part of his life. Surrounded by forest and wildlife from a young age, he developed a strong connection to the environment and a deep respect for the animals that live in it.

Denroy has gained extensive hands-on experience through his years of work at Corbin Local Wildlife. He’s been involved since the beginning, helping out during school breaks and growing into a key member of the team.

What Denroy enjoys most is building trust with the animals and watching them thrive.

Our Mission

Corbin Local Wildlife exists to protect, restore and celebrate Tobago’s unique biodiversity. Through habitat creation, captive breeding and public education, we aim to reverse the decline of native species.

Protect Tobago’s wildlife through ethical captive breeding and the reintroduction of species that are endangered or extinct on the island.

Restore native habitats by managing forest in ways that support biodiversity, soil health, and long-term sustainability.

Educate and inspire by welcoming visitors, students, and researchers to meet Tobago’s wildlife up close and learn about the importance of conservation.

Promote sustainable farming practices that show how food production and biodiversity can coexist through organic methods and smart land use.

Gather and share data to support informed policy-making and community engagement in the protection of Tobago’s fragile ecosystems.
